New Kardashian, Jenner websites and apps expose thousands of fans to online risks
The new websites and mobile apps launched by the Kardashian-Jenner girls may have put thousands of their fans at risk. Just a few days since the apps went live on Monday, personal online information of subscribers have been leaked online.
According to a report by tech website Gawker, names and emails of numerous people have been leaked after they downloaded and signed up for subscriptions in the apps dedicated to the reality show sisters.
The report states that over 600,000 fans have been exposed to potential spammers and other possible online risks. “I now had access to the first names, last name and email addresses of the 663,270 people who signed up for Kylie Jenner’s website,” explained software engineer Alaxic Smith. “I also had the ability to create/destroy users, photos, videos and more,” he added.
The engineer also explained that he could do the same and call up the subscriber information for the websites and apps dedicated to Kim and Khloe Kardashian as well as Kendall Jenner. Kourtney Kardashian also has an app and website, which will both be available later this year.
Apart from being exposed to the risk of spamming, the engineer brought up the bigger issue of payment information. Fans who download the apps may choose to access only the free but limited content. If they want access to more personal content, a U.S. $2.99 (AU$4.03) monthly subscription fee is required. This means that hundreds and thousands of people are sending their payment information through these sites.
So far, no complaints have been reported in relation to a privacy breach. However, numerous fans have complained about the subscription fee. Kylie Jenner, whose app is so far the most popular, has spoken up to defend the fees.
