It was revealed that a new political party is planning to combat the federal government's proposed mining tax for the benefit of Western Australians.

WA First is currently seeking for 500 members in order to register and run three of its candidates for the Senate in the next federal election. Former ALP member Scott Cowans is heading the new party.

Mr. Cowans told media that West Australia is not getting its fair share of federal funding as it helped fund other states and territories of $8 billion a year.

Mr. Cowans added that the main agenda for WA First is to fight against mining tax as its forefront on the election campaign. He said the transfer of wealth to New South Wales and Victoria will endanger WA's investments and jobs.

The proposed mining tax has raised concerns from the WA mining companies, business leaders, and Premier Colin Barnett.

WA First also plans to tackle issues related to the the State and will publicly express its disapproval on secession for WA.

Mr. Cowans said he already cut ties with Labor to concentrate in organizing his new party. The party is currently looking for members before it registers with the Australian Electoral Commission next week.

Investment adviser John Goodland and James Versteegen, a former diplomant of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will also join WA First as Senate candidates.

The birth of the new political party came before the federal government announced its 40 per cent tax on mining companies.
