New Social Media Sensation is Prime Minister Kevin Rudd
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was just showing his human side when he posted through Instagram his selfie showing that he cut himself while shaving.
And then he tweeted jokingly, "Note to self: when rushing out the door in the morning, make sure you take care with the razor. It is sharp. Krudd."
He was just being a normal person, but as of Thursday, July 11, his Instagram selfie had already had 6,600 Facebook likes and 6,250 on Isntagram.
Just this Thursday morning, his Facebook fan page likes already reached 87,000 which is a remarkable 12 per cent increase to the numbers of previous likers just in one day. Meanwhile, his rival Tony Abbott only has 37,758 likes in his Facebook page.
According to a report from Nine MSN, Mr Rudd's advisers approximate that there were about 148,000 people who view the picture. The figure was something unusual and remarkable for an Instagram selfie.
Jeff Richardson, chief executive of Online Circle Digital, said, "The data is showing us that the public appreciate seeing the human side of our leaders." Online Circle Digital is a digital intelligence business which tracks audience responses.
Today, the new Social Media sensation Mr Rudd said that he prefer to engage people both on mundane issues as well as politics and policy.
Mr Rudd said that he had been "dealing with people and social media for a long, long time. I get lots of positive responses and I get lots of negative responses. That is the nature of social media."
"But I would much rather be engaging people, and not just on the high policy debates we're having today but the normal stuff that happens in a person's life."
He joked on, "Guess what? Prime ministers are human and occasionally they cut themselves shaving."
As for rivals and critics who dismiss his now viral selfie, he had this to say: "Loosen up a bit from time to time."
In his address at the National Press Club in Canberra, Mr Rudd said, "I don't intend to change my ways for any sense of political correctness out there. It is just me. People might like it, people might loathe it, but frankly that's just me and I don't intend to get into the restructuring-or-personality business. That is not my style."
Social media had always been an important part to Mr Rudd's political career as his means to reach the people.
In June 26, 2013, his Facebook Friends were the very first ones to know a very important announcement from Mr Rudd himself, "Today I am announcing that I will be a candidate for the position of Leader of the Parliamentary Labor Party."
Within just few hours after his announcement there were already 12,534 likes in his Facebook fan page and 978 people had already commented.
Back in February of 2013, Mr Rudd started to win fans over around social media platforms when he started posting family pictures and joking with voters both on Twitter and Facebook.
In his YouTube page, out of 20 videos he uploaded, 15 already had at least 11, 200 views.
