New and Unhealthy Promotion Strategies of Food Manufacturers
A consumer watchdog reported recently that health food labeling is highly misleading people on what to buy on groceries. Salty, fatty, and unhealthy food products claim that they are low in sodium, carbohydrates, and fats. The promotional strategy of these food companies is a huge obstacle in promoting healthy food products in the market.
Because these companies know that people are wise in choosing products, their new campaign is to add a huge text saying “high in fiber” or other catchy statements. But when you actually check out the amount of the health nutrient like fiber at the back of the product, you can see a small “1.5%” on it.
''Supermarket aisles are littered with products that make '99 per cent fat free' or 'high in protein' claims, which are often a cover for their high sugar content,'' says Ingrid Just, Choice’s spokeswoman. ''Similarly, claims like 'source of whole grains,' or 'low sugar' may be drawing attention away from a product's high saturated fat levels.''
This problem called Choice, a concern organization, to act by posting these food products on their Wall of Shame, a segment of offenders on their website. Aside from that, they are also calling the government to introduce a nutrient profiling system. They suggested traffic light food labeling which can help consumers to easily get real healthy products.
Salty, Healthy, and Dodgy Food Products - Their Effects on People’s Health
Not everything is safe to eat. And since food companies have their ways of misleading people, consumers should be wiser and make sure that they provide nothing but the best for their families.
These unhealthy food products can cause acute to chronic diseases like hypertension, cardiovascular problems, and many more. For instance, products with high sodium content can lead to high blood pressure especially if they are taken regularly.
On the other hand, studies have shown that preserved food products are carcinogenic. Food like hotdogs, bacon, and ham could be some of the kids’ favorites however, you should be aware that these processed products are high in fat and sodium. Therefore, it is important to consume these food products in moderation.
Aside from adding more risks in acquiring different diseases, these food products can also cause slow brain development and poor memory. It is indeed important for consumers, especially parents, to monitor the food intake of their kids. This calls for meticulous buying, reading the labels, and only buying real healthy products.
