New Year, New Trend: Goodbye Facebook, Hello Snapchat?
The New Year rings in a new range of devices, gadgets, apps and social networking site. For one, Facebook enjoyed a great run in 2013 but chances are it won't be the same this 2014. After failing to buy out Snapchat for 3 billion USD, reports claim Snapchat is set to become 2014's latest trend.
Snapchat is currently the fastest-growing message system today. It has over five million active users and continues to be the most downloaded in US mobile users. Facebook had offered 3 billion USD to buy out the system but had been rejected. For Evan Spiegel, co-founder and chief executive, it was a great move.
Teenagers over the age of 16 are now leaving Facebook in the favour of Snapchat and Twitter. According to the report of e Europe-wide Global Social Media Impact Study, Mark Zuckerberg's famous Web site has become "uncool and dead buried."
"Facebook is not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried. Mostly they feel embarrassed to even be associated with it. Where once parents worried about their children joining Facebook," stated Daniel Miller, the person who had run the study.
"The children now say it is their family that insists they stay there to post about their lives. Many teens across Europe are apparently flocking to Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp in search of privacy from their parents," continued Daniel.
Facebook allows everyone to connect with people from across the globe and ironically even those close to home. With no privacy from their parent, teenagers aged 16 to 18 in the UK have left the Web site for Snapchat.
"What appears to be the most seminal moment in a young person's decision to leave Facebook was surely that dreaded day your mom sends you a friend request," stated Miller, adding, "Facebook has become the link with older family, or even older siblings who have gone to university. It is nothing new that young people care about style and status in relation to their peers, and Facebook is simply not cool any more."
Aside from UK teens making the jump from Facebook to Snapchat, Hollywood celebrities are also taking advantage of the message system from Harry Styles of One Direction to Justin Bieber.
