Victoria officials are considering Shepparton as one of four locations across Victoria for a new mental health facility, which is aimed at providing Aussie youths with mental health care as well as vocational support.

The center is also seen as a drug and alcohol addiction institution to rehabilitate the affected youth.

The Member for Shepparton, Jeanette Powell, told ABC news the town currently has a long waiting list of people wanting access to mental health services. She says given the high demand, Headspace will be a welcome addition to services currently available.

The mental health center for the youth is hoped to bring help much closer to young adults, regardless of whether they go to school or not, so that recovery would be accessible to them.

Addiction remains a growing concern among troubles that young adults go through due to peer pressure, bad counsel and unhealthy perceptions on life.

"Shepparton has the largest youth population in the Hume region, so as well as having a large Indigenous population it also has a very strong multinational population with a large number of refugees, so it was seen as an area that does need those specific services," she said.
