As New Zealand Prime Minister John Key faced a Labour leadership challenge from Grant Robertson, Shane Jones and David Cunliffe, a poll said New Zealanders do not believe in what he says.

According to the survey, although Kiwis trust the prime minister, majority don't necessarily believe in him. A Fairfax Media-Ipsos survey revealed that John Key was rated as an effective and strong leader. When Kiwi survey respondents were asked if they completely believed what John Key says, only 23.5 per cent responded Yes while more than half or 58.6 per cent answered No.

Ironically in a survey taken before David Shearer gave up the Labour leadership, he was rated higher than the current prime minister despite the wide criticisms he received, including forgetting to account for $50,000 stored in a New York bank account. During that time, 43 per cent of respondents said they did not believe in Shearer's word, while 33 per cent believed him.

Prime Minister John Key's "believability" rating has dropped after a series of issues, including Kim Dotcom, GSCB Bill and the appointment of Mr Key's childhood friend as head of the security agency.

Mr Key had said he was not surprised when David Shearer stepped down as the leader of the Labour party.

Meanwhile, when asked about Team New Zealand's bid for the upcoming America's Cup, Mr Key said the government will support their campaign. He said if the team wins, it will be a "tremendous event" in the country.

Team New Zealand recently won the Louis Vuitton Cup following a 7-1 win over Luna Rossa. The victory will be good for the economy will raise New Zealand's reputation in Europe and in the United States. If the Emirates Team New Zealand will beat Oracle on Sept 8, it will boost New Zealand's economy if the America's Cup will return to the country's shores.
