A two kilogramme newborn baby boy was rescued by fire fighters from a sewage pipe in an apartment building in China, according to reports. He was reportedly flushed down the toilet by still unidentified suspects.

According to reports, it was the residents of Jinhua in the eastern province of Zhejiang who reported the incident and called the fire fighters for help. They said they immediately asked for rescue team after they heard baby cries in the squat lavatory of the building's fourth floor.

At first, rescuers had difficulty pulling the baby out. So what they did was they sawed off a portion of the 10-cm diameter pipe while the baby was still inside. After he was pulled out, he was brought to the local hospital for further treatment.

"Fortunately the baby survived. But the person who abandoned him is still suspected of attempted murder," an unidentified police officer recounted, according to hangzhou.com.cn. (See the baby taken out at 1:00 min.)

It took the fire fighters and medical personnel almost one hour to complete the rescue procedure. They ripped the tube apart portion by portion using pliers and saws. When they finally recovered the baby, they saw that the baby's placenta was still attached to him.

The newborn endured being stuck in the tube for at least two hours, from the moment he was discovered to the time he was completely taken out, according to reports.

Because of the rescue procedure, his face and limbs sustained some cuts and his heart rate dipped at one point, the reports added.

At the time of rescue, police are still investigating on the identity of the baby's parents.

In China, the one-child policy is strictly enforced. Those who cannot afford to pay the government substantial amount are not allowed to raise more than one child. The government imposes heavy fines to those who break the law.

Also, traditional Chinese families usually prefer sons, but babies born out of wedlock are at times abandoned due to inability to support them financially.
