Newcrest fronts problems at Africa, Indonesia mines
Newcrest Mining Ltd (ASX:NCM) said today its Bonikro gold mine in Cote d'Ivoire has reduced site activities to a minimum due to the situation following the elections in the African country.
Precautionary measures are in place to ensure the safety and security of all employees, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
The bulk of the mine management have now temporarily relocated to nearby Accra in Ghana and the mine is being managed from there with security and local employees maintaining the site in preparation for a resumption of operations as soon as possible.
Newcrest said, "Close contact is being maintained with the authorities, including relevant consular and embassy officials.
"No threats have been made to the mine or its employees."
In a separate statement, Newcrest has advised it is working to reopen a part of the Kencana underground mine at Gosowong on the island of Halmahera in Indonesia.
Two operators who were working on an excavator and an underground loader in a sublevel of the mine on Sunday afternoon were separated from the main workings when a movement of 'mudstone' material blocked access to the area.
Both men are unharmed and contact for the purposes of communication and providing food and water has been established via a number of holes drilled into the area, according to Newcrest.
"Progress is carefully being pursued now that contact and reprovisioning has been established. The length of time to effect a full recovery is expected to be several days."
