Matthew Newton is back. Fresh from the rehab, he will rebuild his life by starting with a hosting job on a television show.

The Australian stage and screen actor admitted himself in the Malvern Private Hospital, which is known for its specialisation in drug and alcohol addiction.

Newton spent his professional life building a showbiz career different from his dad Bert. Now, he has just signed a contract with Channel 7 for the re-make of the reality show The X-Factor.

The high-profile gig is Newton's second chance in his career. During his audition, he did very well, beating more established TV hosts including Sonia Kruger and Axle Whitehead. The break came in just two weeks after his one-month stint in rehab.

"I'm extremely honoured to be given this opportunity," he said.

"I'm up for new things and going on a fresh journey. It's exciting."

Newton haven't told his father about the hosting gig since Newton Sr is on rival Channel 9.

He had his first filming day for The X-Factor in Perth yesterday. He was upbeat and said that he was happy to be able to get out and meet lots of people.

Newton will join judges Kyle Sandilands, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Sebastian and Ronan Keating in The X-Factor where showbiz hopefuls give their best performances.
