You and your Nexus 4 (lucky you) may want to extend the possibilities that this powerful smartphone, powered by stock version of Android, can do. BootUnlocker is the answer, according to folks at RedmondPie.com.

This Android app, available at Google Play store, is the key that will unlock the bootloader on your Nexus 4, allowing for a Superuser access on the phone. Note that a rooted handset accommodates all sorts of modifications that its users would want to do.

But this process comes with a serious hazard - opening up the device to malware attacks that were deployed to pilfer useful data, Redmond Pie said.

You will need another tool to close down the bootloader on your Nexus 4 and popular among users is Fastboot. This app, however, comes with a downside. Firing it up wipes out everything on the phone. In essence, it provides the necessary protection by doing away with vulnerabilities but also forces you to start over. Hassle indeed, right?

But this troubling cycle can be a thing of the past, thanks to BootUnlocker. This app performs its programmed duties within Android, unlocks and relocks the bootloader without the need to refresh your Nexus 4. That means your setting, data and everything are intact.

BootUnlocker works with almost surgical precision - allowing you tinker with the Nexus 4 but also offering some form of shield for the things you do not want to mess with, Redmond Pie said.

"The application requires a rooted Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 or Nexus 10, and will let you unlock and relock the bootloader as many times as you like," added the tech blog site.

And the best thing about this Android app, a free download mind you, is it "makes sure that you retain a certain measure of security when it comes to bootloader-level vulnerabilities," Redmond Pie said.

It would have been good if BootUnlocker works across the Nexus devices but no joy for Nexus 7 - no support for the smaller Google tablet at the moment, says the same blog post.
