NFL News: Jerry Jones ready to let go of Tony Romo, looking for Dallas Cowboys trade of QB
Veteran QB could be leaving Dallas soon
The latest NFL news could be a sign that the Dallas Cowboys is finally letting go of veteran quarterback Tony Romo. According to reports on Monday, Cowboys owner and general manager (GM) Jerry Jones will allow Romo to meet with other NFL GMs and talk about a possible partnership for next season.
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL.com, Jones has already notified other GMs of all NFL teams that they can contact Romo or Romo’s agent. This means that they can also schedule a workout or a visit with the veteran quarterback.
“Jerry Jones notified all NFL GMs they are permitted to contact Tony Romo or his agent to schedule a workout, visit or physical, source says,” Garafolo said via Twitter. “The Cowboys informed clubs they are 'limited to conversations concerning (Romo's) 2017-19 NFL player contract' (i.e. to facilitate a trade).”
Earlier reports had the Cowboys trying to trade Romo this offseason. But interest in a direct trade has reportedly been subdued because other interested teams expect Romo to be available in free agency.
Dallas can choose to waive Romo and make him available in the free agent market. After weeks of trying to unload Romo via a trade it appears the Cowboys doesn’t have a choice but to just cut the veteran QB.
Romo has lost his starting QB job in Dallas with the great play of rookie Dak Prescott, who led the team to one of the league’s best records last season. Romo was injured during the preseason games last year and he recovered from the injury late in the season.
He served as a backup in one game and registered 29 passing yards on 3 of 4 completions with a touchdown. The year before his unfortunate injury and before he lost his starting job, Romo also played just four games because of another injury. His last good season was in 2014 when he recorded 3,705 passing yards on 304 of 435 completions with 34 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
Prescott led the Cowboys to a 13-3 record in the regular season. However, Dallas lost to the veteran Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the NFL postseason. Even with the early playoff loss, the Cowboys is contented in bringing back its star rookie as the starting quarterback next season and its long-term starter as well.
Tony Romo has no other choice but to play as a backup in Dallas or move to other teams where he can be the starting QB. According to reports earlier this offseason, the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos are probable landing spots for the veteran quarterback.
