NFL News: Washington Redskins Send Philadelphia Eagles To Brink Of Elimination
The lowly Washington Redskins played spoilers in a rare National Football League (NFL) Saturday game by beating the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-24. The win was inconsequential for the Redskins, which are already out of the playoff hunt but was crucial for the Eagles, which suffered their sixth loss in 15 games in the regular season and almost out of the running for a playoff berth.
Kai Forbath kicked a 26-yard field goal with five seconds to go to provide the game-winner for Washington, which improved to 4-11 but has nothing to play but pride in the regular season. The loss by the Eagles allowed rivals Dallas Cowboys to notch the NFC East with a single win in their last two games. The Cowboys face the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday and the Redskins in their final game in the regular season.
Philadelphia, which is on a three game losing streak, will end theirs with a trip to the New York to face the Jets in a must-win game if they want a chance for a postseason slot. Philadelphia also got eliminated from the race for a wild car spot and meant that the Detroit Lions will go to the postseason.
Robert Griffin III threw for 220 yards on 16 of 23 completions with an interception and ex-Eagle DeSean Jackson delivered the big blows against his former team with 126 receiving yards off 4 catches including two 50-plus yards that led to touchdowns. For Philly, quarterback Mark Sanchez had a career-high 374 passing yards on 37 of 50 passes with two touchdowns but threw a crucial interception with 1:31 left in the game that led to the game-winning field goal from Forbath. Zach Ertz had 115 yards on 15 receptions while LeSean McCoy ran for 88 yards on 22 carries.
Philadelphia led 14-10 at the half but Washington scored on a pair of TD in the third quarter to give the Redskins the 24-14 lead entering the final quarter. Eagles fought back to tie it with a TD and a field goal with 6:17 remaining in the game.
