NHL News: New York Rangers and Cam Talbot Agree On Contract Extension
New York Rangers goalie Cam Talbot will stay with the Big Apple team for at least a season after agreeing to a one-year contract extension that is reportedly worth $1.45 million, almost triple his previous contract valued at just $575,000.Talbot remains the primary back up to starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist and avoided becoming an unrestricted free agent.
The 27-year-old goalie, who has a record of 3-3-1 with three shutouts, was undrafted when he entered the league. Talbot from Caledonia, Ontario, Canada started in 19 of 21 games played in the 2012-2013 NHL season for a 12-6 record. For his career he is 15-9 allowing 48 goals or an average of 1.74 goals allowed. He has a save percentage of 93.8%.
Talbot was named the 2010 College Hockey America (CHA) tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) and was selected to the CHA All-Tournament Team, a performance that proved vital in convincing hockey scouts that he had enough skills to enter the National Hockey League (NHL). The 6-foot-3 lefty was signed by the New York Rangers as a free agent in March 30, 2010. Talbot had his NHL debut on October 24 in a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.
The New York Rangers currently holds a win-loss-tie record of 32-18-10 or 46 points for 7th place in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers allow 2.5 goals per game or 10th overall in the entire league. New York faces the New Jersey Devils, Dallas Stars and Florida Panthers to end the year before facing the Buffallo Sabres, Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings to start 2015.
