Australian actors Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce are all set to star in Screen Australia's independent film "Strangerland," directed by Kim Farrant.

"Strangerland," is a mystery thriller written by Michael Kinirons and Fiona Seres about a couple named Matthew and Catherine Parker, whose 2 teenage children disappear in the Australian desert.

The film's producers are Macdara Kelleher and Naomi Wenck. Its executive producers include Molly Conners, Richard Payten, Maria Cestone, Christopher Woodrow, Sarah E. Johnson and Andrew Mackie.

Fastnet Films and Dragonfly Pictures collaborated with each other to produce "Strangerland." Meanwhile, Worldview Entertainment will provide gap financing. Wild Bunch will be in charge of the film's international sales, while Transmission Films will distribute it in Australia.

"Kim Farrant's "Strangerland," has an incredible cast including Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving, a strong creative vision and massive A-list festival potential," said Ruth Harley, Screen Australia's Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

According to Screen Australia, it invested $5.4 million dollars to make 6 feature films, including "Backyard Ashes," "Last Cab to Darwin," "Maya the Bee Movie," "Women He's Undressed," "Force of Destiny," and "Strangerland." The said investment triggered over $31.3 million in production costs.

"The feature slate announced today includes exciting projects from some of Australia's most loved and acclaimed directors such as Gillian Armstrong and Paul Cox, as well as projects from rising directorial talents such as Mark Grentell and Kim Farrant." Harley added.

This will be Kim Farrant's feature film debut, although she has directed a TV show, a short film and a documentary such as "Rush," "Shooting the Breeze" and "Naked on the Inside."

Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman was previously seen in "Stoker," which was written by "Prison Break" actor Wentworth Miller. She also starred in "The Paperboy," as Charlotte Bless with Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey.

Guy Pearce, who is best known for the 2000 film "Memento," was recently seen in "Iron Man 3" and "Prometheus."

Hugo Weaving who was last seen in blockbuster films such as "Captain America: The First Avenger," and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," will reprise his role as Elrond in the next installments of "The Hobbit," film entitled "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," to be shown in 2013 and "The Hobbit: There and Back Again," which is slated for release in 2014.
