Though ex-couple Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder appeared to have an awkward reunion during the CW Upfronts event in New York City, new reports have emerged revealing what happened behind closed doors. Unnamed sources claimed that the "Vampire Diaries" stars had an emotional heart-to-heart talk and Nina looked sad.

According to the UsWeekly report, the 24-year-old Canadian actress looked sad and uncomfortable meeting up with Ian. "Her eyes welled up. She looked so sad," the source revealed to the entertainment magazine.

The two Hollywood stars appeared on stage with CW President Mark Pedowitz where contradicting reports claimed that Ian and Nina avoided eye contact with each other.

"It was awkward," a source revealed.

The concept of marriage became a sensitive subject in Nina and Ian's relationship. Another insider told UsWeekly that Nina felt it is still too early for her to take things to the next level, particularly settling down.

Nina and Ian met and fell in love on the set of the successful hit TV series "The Vampire Diaries." The brunette beauty was first anxious about having a romantic relationship with someone that she works with but later on realized she could no longer resist the feelings.

"I didn't want to be dating one of my co-stars. My goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can't help who you have a connection with and you can only fight it for so long, which I did for a really, really long time," Nina shared.

Sadly, the former "perfect couple" decided to end their relationship of three years after Nina and Ian let the fans and media know about their relationship in 2011. Proof that trouble is in paradise when Nina Dobrev hinted in 2012 that things are not smoothly going well between her and Ian.

Despite the break-up, friends and co-workers believe that Ian and Nina are professionals at work and they will continue to work together and be good friends when the "Vampire Diaries" Season 5 returns this fall season.
