NME 2014 Successful: Arctic Monkeys Five Wins, Lily Allen Makes Huge Comeback
Arctic Monkeys is a big winner at the 2014 NME Awards with five wins out of eight nominations, the Telegraph UK reports. The band swept the board by winning the Best British Award and Best Album. In addition, they also won awards such as Best Live Band and Best Fan Community. Alex Turner, the band's lead vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter also won the title of Hero of the Year.
Arctic Monkey just released their fifth album, AM, last year. Counting this year incredible wins, the band now won 18 NME Awards overall.
Ironically, Johnny Marr presented Arctic Monkeys with their Best British Band prize even though he was not requested to pick up the award for his absent former Smiths colleague.
Lily Allen on the other hand, makes a huge comeback into the British Music scene, according to the Independent UK. She beats Sir Paul McCartney, David Bowie and Kanye West and bags the Best Solo Artist Award. What is interesting about Lily Allen's win is that it takes place after three years of "retiring" from the music scene.
Allen, now 28, marked her comeback last November with her hit single entitled "Hard Out There." The song and the video portrayed and attacked unreasonable demands and pressures in the entertainment industry when it comes to body images. Her song and video also raised the issue of misogyny. It was a song with quite a substance, attacking sensitive issues plaguing the entertainment industry.
Allen had covered Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know," which was played during the John Lewis Christmas advert. The song topped the charts ever since proving the "retired" songstress did not lose her charm and voice even one bit.
Summer this year 2014, Allen also plans to release Sheezus, her first album after taking a long 3-year break since 2009. The title is meant to pay homage to the release of Yeezus by West. All these proved Allen's comeback is very strong and winning the Best Solo Artist category was just icing on the cake. Her win on the highly competitive category cinched the return of Allen and vocals.
NME 2014 is a success. Mike Williams, editor of NME, shared: "What an incredible night it has been. Tonight revealed the outcome of hundreds of thousands of votes by passionate music fans, reflecting just how much fantastic music there is to be celebrated both in Britain and internationally."
