No Fatalities in 100-Car Pile Up in UK Bridge, Mystery Truck Driver Hailed a Hero [VIDEOS]
It was a miracle no one was killed in a massive vehicle collision involving 100 cars on UK's Sheppey Bridge due to heavy fog. The 100-car pile-up occurred along the Sheppey Crossing bridge on A249 in Kent. The pile up continued for 10 minutes as cars and trucks bumped into each other.
Witnesses on the bridge said all they could see was like a sea of cars and trucks tangled in one big heap. One witness said all he could hear was the sound of cars colliding. He said he saw "cars in the air" and people down on the floor.
Despite the zero death, eight people were seriously injured from the massive crash, while 33 people sought medical treatment in hospitals.
Many lives were probably saved because of a driver's quick thinking. The lorry driver moved his truck to block the entrance to Sheppey Bridge. His truck kept more cars from crashing forward to add to the growing pile up.
Kent Police Chief Inspector Andy Reeves said he has never seen a huge pile of cars involved in a crash in 20 years. He also said everyone was lucky because nobody died from the accident.
Source: Youtube/AZCNewsViewMartin Stammers, 45, saw the 100-car pile-up and was horrified at the sight. When he heard cars crashing ahead, he and his companions went out of their vehicle. Mr Stammers described what he saw as eerie since visibility was only as far as 20 yards.
Mr Stammers' car was the last one to approach the already growing heap of cars. He said he was lucky to have hit his brakes just in time.
The police chief inspector said it was still not clear what caused the cars to collide, but the poor visibility because of the heavy fog and drivers' reactions were suspected to be factors.
Authorities also noted there was not enough lighting on the bridge. This could be a problem for drivers passing through the bridge. The lack of lighting was pointed out by Conservative MP Gordon Henderson, since the bridge was declared open to vehicles in July 2006, according to The Telegraph report.
The still unidentified driver who moved his truck to block the carriageway was praised for his heroic act. Witnesses who saw the truck driver in action said he managed to move his truck at the end of the carriageway to stop more cars from joining the crash before emergency responders arrived at the scene.
