No luck for Hugh Jackman on BAFTAs
It's sad news for Hugh Jackman and his fans alike today as the Australian actor misses out on a BAFTA after the results were turned in this morning.
Jackman, nominated for the musical Les Miserables, apparently proved some critics right that he has little to no chance of winning against Daniel Day-Lewis after the hot favourite was named best actor for his title role in the historic drama Lincoln.
Jackman reportedly had not been confident ahead of the BAFTAs, saying that just being nominated was already a thrill. Before the ceremony, Day-Lewis reigned favourite at 1/25, while Jackman sat next at 10/1.
"In my nature, I'm not a betting man, particularly if I'm in the race," he told the BBC. "I wouldn't bet on me."
Meanwhile, Jackman's co-star Anne Hathaway did not disappoint and was named best supporting actress for her role as Fantine. Hathaway thanked the cast and crew in her speech and showed appreciation to Jackman, saying, "I've run out of superlatives for you, man. You're just the best."
Les Miserables received the most awards, with a BAFTA for best production design, sound, and make-up and hair.
The biggest win this year goes to Ben Affleck's Argo for taking the best film award, further increasing their chances at the Oscars later this month. The film based on the true story of American hostages in Iran in 1979 has been building steam after winning a number of U.S. awards, including best movie drama at the Golden Globes.
Another Australian who missed out on a BAFTA is Rick Findlater, nominated for his work in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in the category make-up and hair.
However, hope remains for all Aussie nominees in the upcoming Academy Awards, having four big hopefuls, including Jackman's first nomination as best actor. The prestigious event will take place on February 24.
