No, 'The Punisher' is not getting its own TV spinoff
There have been rumours that "The Punisher" will have its own TV spinoff, similar to "Daredevil" and "Jessica Jones." However, the talks were immediately shot down.
According to Digital Spy, Jeph Loeb, executive vice president of Marvel Television, stated that there is no project in the works and fans will only see Frank Castle, to be played by Jon Bernthal, in Season 2 of “Daredevil” on Netflix, which is set to premiere on Mar. 18.
“I think that’s something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that’s actually happening. It’s certainly our hope that any of our characters will be embraced and that people want to see more of them,” Loeb stated.
The executive VP also mentioned that it is not actually Marvel’s priority to receive awards for their shows, after “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” failed to be recognised. He explained that they are trying to tell the best stories possible. For them, the greatest award was when Netflix called and requested them to come up with a second season of “Jessica Jones.” Due to the successful run of the female superhero, many viewers were not surprised that there would be a follow-up season, but Loeb admitted that he was.
Loeb explained that the opportunity to make another season is not automatic in television. He said that being allowed to continue telling their stories with the characters says much about the quality of their content, the writing and the acting. He continued that they are telling the best stories possible at Netflix and viewers appear to be responding well to these.
IGN notes that although a separate series for "The Punisher" is not currently in the works, the producers may decide to make one, depending on how people respond to Frank Castle in the new season of “Daredevil.” Showrunner Doug Petrie said that The Punisher will have a quick introduction when “Daredevil” Season 2 debuts. Charlie Cox will return as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, while Elodie Yung will play Elektra Natchios.
Punisher fans will see him go head-to-head against Daredevil on Netflix, starting Mar. 18. More updates and details are expected soon.
