Notorious Murderer Escapes From Laval Prison
The Quebec provincial police is seeking the public's help in catching a Hells Angels member who ran away from a Laval prison on Saturday night.
René Charlebois has been charged for killing a police informant. He is also charged for a few other offenses. That is why he was kept at the Montée St-François Institution. Mr Charlebois escaped from the prison of Saturday night at around 10:45 p.m., police said.
Mr Charlebois was charged for killing Claude DeSerre in 2004. The lifeless body of Mr DeSerre was found in 2000 at a place situated to the north of Montreal. Mr DeSerre was shot in the head as he was found in tied-up condition. The most dramatic evidence of the murder was an audio recording device which had been given to Mr DeSerre by the police earlier.
The audio device recorded Mr DeSerre's conversation with the murderer during the last moments of his life. Mr Charlebois was charged for second-degree murder along with the conspiracy to commit the murder. He was also charged for trafficking Schedule 1 and 2 substances as well as narcotics. He was charged for participation in one criminal organisation as well, as reported by Serge Abergel, a Correctional Service Canada spokesperson.
Interestingly, this is not the first time a criminal managed to run away from the federal institution. Gilles Meloche ran away last year. However, he was recaptured eventually. Later, Mr Meloche told one journalist that he just had to push the door in order to get out of the prison. In the same week, one more prisoner escaped from the prison.
Mr Charlebois has already been identified by the police as one of the close associates of Maurice Boucher who is the supremo of Hells Angels. Questions arose on why such a notorious murderer had been kept in the minimum security prison. Meanwhile, the Correctional Service of Canada is going to an open investigation to determine the cause of Mr Charlebois' escape.
