Novak Djokovic Defends Paris Bercy Crown, Increases Gap Against Roger Federer In The World Rankings
Novak Djokovic has successfully defended his title after beating Milos Raonic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, in the finale of the men's singles event of the BNP Paribas Masters on Nov. 2. Djokovic has previously won the title in 2009 and 2013. Djokovic's recent victory is his 20th Association of Tennis Professionals, or ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown. Djokovic, now, has a strong lead over Roger Federer in his quest to end the season on top of the world rankings.
Djokovic has stretched his lead over Federer to 1,310 after winning the title in Paris. Djokovic told the British sports channel Sky Sports that he couldn't be "happier and grateful" at this point in his life.
Djokovic recalled the great things that happened in his 2014 season. The Serb married his longtime sweethear Jelena in July and recently became a father to their first born in October. Djokovic also won a Grand Slam title this season at Wimbledon. He also managed to stay on top of the world rankings.
"This is definitely the best time of my life," Djokovic told Sky Sports. "I'm trying to savour every moment of it." Djokovic said that he will be heading home to see his wife and little bundle of joy before he heads to London for the World Tour Finals.
Federer's quest to reclaim the number one rank was crushed after he was beaten by Raonic in the quarterfinals, 7-6 (5), 7-5. He had narrowed the gaps in recent weeks but his loss in Paris has closed down his pursue to salvage the World No. 1 rank. Nonetheless, Federer felt relieved that he would have more time to prepare for the season-ending tournament at the O2 Arena in London.
In an interview after his quarterfinals match against Raonic, Federer admitted that it was tough to loss. He came to Paris on a 12-match winning streak. He has won titles at the Shanghai Rolex Masters and the Swiss Indoors Basel. Federer applauded Raonic for playing great tennis. It was the first time that Federer has lost to Raonic, who just booked his spot in London after making it in the finals of the Paris Bercy tournament.
