Novak Djokovic 'grateful to play well' ahead of ATP World Tour Finals
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic said he is enjoying the “best year” of his life after winning his ninth title of the season and 25 th ATP Masters title. Djokovic easily dispatched Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2 6-4 at the Shanghai Rolex Masters final, completing the best two weeks of his tennis career.
Djokovic has been on a hot streak ever since winning his 10th Grand Slam title at the US Open in August, claiming back-to-back tournament wins at the China Open and the Shanghai Masters. With the way the Serb is playing, it is expected he will add another title to his record as he wraps up his season at the upcoming Paris Masters and the ATP season finale at London O2 next month.
“Everything is working great,” Djokovic told ATP World Tour’s official website . “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be able to play this well.”
Djokovic’s impressive stats and his recent victories suggest he is indeed playing well ahead of his title defence at The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Since 2011, Djokovic has only lost two matches between the US Open and the end of the season. Over the past two weeks, Djokovic swept both tournaments while winning all 20 sets against 10 opponents, featuring Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal, and four other top-20 opponents. He swept the China Open and Shanghai Masters in 2012 and 2013, losing only a total of five sets.
The Independent noted that Djokovic’s season has developed into one of the greatest ever. The 10-time Grand Slam winner has not dropped a set either in Shanghai or in Beijing, and has reached 13 finals in succession, won nine titles and earned a record $16 million in prize money. Djokovic has cemented his place atop the ATP’s world rankings with 14,285 points, almost half the points of world No. 2 Andy Murray with 7,870 points.
ESPN also cited some of Djokovic’s record that validate his status as the most dominant tennis athlete in this season. In Djokovic’s 87 matches since losing in the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters last year, he won 82 of them and only dropped 35 sets. He also won 31 of 35 games against top-10 opponents, losing just 22 sets. While 13 of his 16 matches against top-five tennis players gave him wins while losing just 15 sets.
Djokovic also reached the final round of 15 out of 16 tournaments, including all four Grand Slams and all eight Masters events he competed, where he won 11 tournaments, which includes all three Grand Slams victories and six Masters titles.
The official facebook page of the ATP World Tour posted a question whether Djokovic is in the midst of the greatest season ever on the ATP World Tour. But regardless of the debate about the Serb’s dominance in today’s tennis, his achievements make him play his best tennis game every time he steps on the court.
"Every time I step on the court, knowing I've had an amazing record this season and also in these tournaments in the previous years makes me play my best and makes me come out on the court with less doubts in my mind, I would say," Djokovic said, reports Yahoo Sports .
