Novak Djokovic Says Tennis Is Not His Top Priority Now
For Novak Djokovic, it is easy to weigh down his priorities in life, especially now that he has gotten married and expecting his first child with Jelena Ristic. For Djokovic, his family is more important than anything else in his life. Obviously, Djokovic's impending fatherhood will occupy a prime place in the Serbian athlete's life.
During the 2014 US Open's media day, Djokovic was asked how the upcoming arrival of his baby is going to affect his professional tennis career. Djokovic is focused on the right priorities in life and has said that he will enjoy and explore fatherhood within his career. He is hopeful that he will be able to translate the positive energy that fatherhood brings on the tennis court.
"I'm going to enjoy it and try to take as much energy as I can, positive energy," Djokovic told the reporters in the press conference ahead of the 2014 US Open on Aug. 23.
Djokovic has stated that family life takes priority over tennis. "But without a doubt, life changes,' he added. "You know, priorities change - my priorities, my family, my wife, my future kid."
"Tennis is definitely not number one anymore."
According to reports, Djokovic started dating Jelena in 2005. They became engaged in September 2013. In April, Djokovic announced that he and Jelena were expecting their first child, who is due in late October. Two months later, the two got married in Montenegro, only a few days after he had won his second Wimbledon title.
Currently, Djokovic is taking part in the 2014 US Open, where he has been named as the top seed of the tournament. He has appeared in the finals of the tournament five times, including four consecutive finals appearance from 2010 to 2013. He won the trophy once in 2011 against rival Rafael Nadal.
USA Today reported that Djokovic is coming to the Open poised and confident despite the threats of five-time US Open champion Roger Federer and 2012 titlist British No. 1 Andy Murray. Djokovic, who is a hot favourite with oddsmakers to win the 2014 US Open trophy, will face Argentine Diego Sebastian Schwartzman in the first round.
