Novak Djokovic On Winning ATP World Tour Finals: 'Clearly, Not The Way I Want To Win'
Novak Djokovic wasn't really too thrilled with his victory at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. Djokovic was supposed to play against Roger Federer in the finals on November 16. Unfortunately, the Swiss was forced to pull out of the tournament due to his injured back. The organisers scheduled exhibition matches after Federer's withdrawal.
Djokovic simply doesn't want another trophy from the World Tour Finals. He would have wanted to deal with Federer and earn his right to win. Djokovic has also won the ATP World Tour Finals in 2008, 2012, and 2013. He became the first player since tennis legend Ivan Lendl (1985-1987) to win in three successive season finale titles.
"Clearly, this is not the way I wanted things to happen," Djokovic said in front of the crowd. "I'm really sorry for Roger for not being able to come to the court."
According to Djokovic, Federer and Rafael Nadal are his biggest rivals in the sport. He only wishes that Federer will be able to make a comeback and recover soon.
Djokovic added that that it would be hard for him to talk about his victory at the 2014 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. He said he wasn't the type of guy who "celebrates these wins." Nonetheless, Djokovic said he was happy with his accomplishments this season and season-finale title is the crown of all the things he has accomplished in 2014.
Djokovic will take a break and be with his wide and newborn son after staying in London for 10 days. He was happy with the thought of being with his family again. He added that tennis will be out of the picture for the next two weeks for him.
Federer has confirmed his withdrawal from the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after the doubles' final on November 16. Federer said he was not fit to play against Djokovic because his back was hurting. The 17-time Grand Slam champion said he did the best that he could such as took pain relievers and lots of rest to make sure he will be ready for the finals, but it just didn't work. Playing at his current level would be a risk at his age, Federer added.
In other news, the Bryan brothers were crowned as the champions in the doubles event. The top-seeded American twins Bob and Mike claimed their fourth Barclays ATP World Tour Finals trophy with 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-7 win over Ivan Dodiq and Marcelo Melo.
