Lady Gaga is all for Miley Cyrus's raunchy MTV Video Music Awards performance and says people need to "lighten up about" it.

By saying so, Gaga has joined the bandwagon of Justin Timberlake, Selena Gomez and many others who have stood up for the 20-year-old pop star's much talked about performance.

Though Gaga didn't want to talk much about Miley's sexy romp at the stage, the singer urged people to take things lightly. "I don't like to pass judgment on Miley Cyrus. Generally, people need to lighten up about pop music -- it's about entertainment," said Lady Gaga in an interview with The Sun newspaper.

Gaga further added that purpose of pop music is to make people happy and put a smile on their face. "It [Pop Music] is here to make you smile and make you happy. Especially in America, there is an excessive dragging of female artists, and I don't want to contribute to that," the singer continued.

The former Hannah Montana actress was in news when she stripped down to her skin-coloured bikini while performing to her latest singe "We Can't Stop." Miley wore a giant, foam finger on her hand as she simulated sex with fellow singer Robin Thicke to the shock of live audience at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, went on to admit that Cyrus' performance was "polarizing" -- "but that's it," she said.

The "Applause" singer also spoke in favour of boy band One Direction who won the "Best Song Ever" award at the VMA and said that it was very difficult to tell who her favourite is as all boys are "cute."

She said: "I can't put the One Direction boys in order of my favourites; they are all equally cute in my book." Gaga, who went on to meet the group backstage after the MTV VMA is all praises for them and also went on to call them "down to earth" and said they are in the music field for "all right reasons."

"Those boys are very special indeed, they are down to earth. I met them backstage properly at the MTV Awards and they are nice guys. They are totally in it for the right reasons and I love to see that. You can tell the difference," the singer added.
