NZ Girl,14, Sustains Spinal Injuries Blamed on Bully Beating
A teenage New Zealand girl suffered spinal injuries from being repeatedly punched by two girls at school.
Adriana Kemp, 14, is in a hospital as a result of bullies' beating at Flaxmere College, New Zealand's TV3 reported.
Adriana was forced to the ground as two classmates repeatedly punched her on a grassy field at school. The attack was filmed and uploaded to YouTube, according to the report.
Adriana was in a stable condition, but her mother, Moana Hawkins, said it was likely her daughter would spend Christmas in Hawkes Bay Hospital.
Hawkins was irate that she learned of her child's condition only via text message and Adriana was not sent to the hospital until after she arrived.
"I can't believe something like this would ever happen at school. You trust your children to go to school and be looked after, and it just didn't happen. ... I asked them if they could ring the police, they said no they can't do that, I had to do it. I said, you should call an ambulance for her because she couldn't move her neck properly. They said for me to take her to the doctors."
The anxious mother also told the media she learned the attack had been filmed and uploaded to the Web.
"It was bad enough finding out that she got attacked, but when I saw the video camera, I broke down. That was shocking. I wouldn't wish that on any mother to see what I saw."
Flaxmere principal Louise Anaru told TV3 the school did not call an ambulance because Adrianna's family said they would take her to the hospital. She admitted bullying was a problem in her school and they were working on that.
