Lorde was the first Kiwi superstar to have a no. 1 hit in the U.S. She was hailed as one of US Weekly's breakout stars for 2013, along with Michael Jordan, 'Superman's" Henry Cavill and "Fifty Shades of Grey" Jamie Dornan.

The 17-year-old New Zealand-bred singer is internationally known as Lorde. Her real name is Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor. The young star recently made a lot of news outside her comfort zone when her debut single, "Royals," made it to the top of Billboard's 100 for 8 weeks.

Since May, "Royals" hit the top spot in countries, including Italy, Canada, UK and Belgium. Lorde couldn't believe her luck as the singer managed to stay on top of the chart for a long time and thank her fans via Twitter expressing her joy.

"EIGHT WEEKS at number 1 in the US blows my mind. thank you so much, you lovely people; you have, quite simply, turned my life upside down [sic]," she wrote.

"Royals" is currently outselling the likes of Eminem and Rihanna's "The Monster" to hold onto the no. 1 spot. Now the single has sold over 3 million copies in the U.S. alone and the record has been certified platinum, and triple platinum in her home country New Zealand.

After her success in the States, the teen starlet opened the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards held at Auckland's Vector Arena with a powerful rendition of her smash hit. She ended the night with a haul of awards: Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Single of the Year for "Royal," International Achievement Award and People's Choice Award.

In one of her acceptance speeches, the singer candidly told the audience: "I feel like it's a sign of my age that I'm reading my speech off my iPhone."

Her debut album, "Pure Heroin," is also making waves as it makes it to the top 5 in the U.S., UK and five other countries. She recently released a cover "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears For Fears as part of "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" soundtrack.
