Obama Wins Critical Support for Military Strike on Syria
In an interesting development on the Syria issue, President Barack Obama has been successful in winning support from key political figures in the U.S., including Eric Cantor and John Boehner.
According to Mr Obama, there is a requirement for a strike on Syria for the degradation of the capabilities of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, in relation with the chemical attack on the civilians in Syria in August.
Important political figures like Eric Cantor and John Boehner already expressed their support for a military assault on Syria before Congress votes on the issue next week. It was confirmed by the UN earlier that over 2 million Syrians have now become refugees. The uprising against the Syrian president that started in March 2011 has allegedly caused the death of over 100,000 people.
Mr Boehner has already offered his support for a military attack on Syria. The House Speaker seems to be confident about the approval of Congress next week. Mr Cantor used Twitter to voice his support on Tuesday. On the other hand, Chuck Hagel said that the Syrian president ought to be held responsible for the use of chemical weapons against the civilians.
Even though Mr Boehner has been opposing most of the decisions made by the U.S. president, he seems to agree with Mr Obama this time as he believes that it is unacceptable to spare Mr Assad after launching a chemical attack on innocent civilians. Mr Boehner said that the U.S. must take the military action as a response to the heinous act.
Interestingly, Mr Cantor is also supposedly to be a strong opponent of Mr Obama. However, he prefers voting in favour of the military attack on Syria to allow Mr Obama to proceed further on the same.
Mr Obama must be relieved to know the positive advancements from the unlikely sources for him as he has been facing strong opposition from the various parts of the country regarding the military attack on Syria. UK informed earlier that it would not be a part of any military attack on Syria. On the other hand, Canada too refused to take an active part in the attack even though it promised political support on the issue.
