Obscure Historical Figure Portrayed by Two Heavy Hitters
Keira Knightley has this perfect classic face that, when partnered with her English accent, creates a combination perfect for a costume drama. This is why the "Pirates of the Caribbean" stunner will portray Effie Gray, the muse of 19th century painter John Everett Millais.
After announcing that she would star as the title character in the Leo Tolstoy novel "Anna Karenina," it has been reported that she is currently in the talks in playing Effie Gray. The film is said to be directed by Brazilian director Andrucha Waddington with a screenplay by Aleksandra Crapanzano.
Knightley, 26, first got noticed in the football movie "Bend It Like Beckham" and eventually starred in the big budget pirate trilogy "Pirates of the Caribbean." She then got nominated for Academy Award for Best Actress and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in the 2005 adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice."
It was her role in movie-turned-movie "Atonement" that got her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, as well as the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
"Gray married leading English art critic John Ruskin as a teenager, though their relationship remained unconsummated; she later fell in love with Millais, his protégé, and ultimately procured an annulment from Ruskin in order to marry him. The film will reportedly focus on the early stages of Gray and Millais' love affair," as reported by HitFix.
However, Indiewire's Thompson on Hollywood reports that there is a different Effie Gray biopic that is in the works, written by Emma Thompson and husband Greg Wise that was being sold at the market last year. Since then, it went into production, starring the young Dakota Fanning as Gray, with Wise and Thompson co-starring alongside Fanning as Ruskin and Lady Elizabeth Eastlake, respectively.
Dakota Fanning is a young actress who first broke though the industry with the 2001 movie, "I Am Sam." She them moved on to other high profile films such as "Man on Fire," "Coralilne," and "The Twilight Saga."
It would be quite a feat to actually see two films compete against each other, with actors of different levels battling it out.
