‘Occupy Wall Street’ Protests Spread in Sydney, Melbourne; Tensions Abated for Now
Versions of the "Occupy Wall Street" protest in New York were staged in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, Spain, Switzerland and Taiwan over the weekend with similar protesters in Sydney and Melbourne demonstrating in Martin Place and City Square.
"Occupy Sydney" saw 2,000 protesters converging outside the Reserve Bank of Australia while 500 people joined the "Occupy Melbourne" to call for an end to "greed."
Riot and mounted police prevented protesters from camping overnight in Martin Place by seizing tents and arrested one protester, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
University and foreign students said they joined the protest to support protesters in New York, according to the Wall Street Journal.
"Occupy Rome" turned the Italian capital into a battle zone as protesters rioted and clashed with police. Cars were torched and bank windows were broken in the largest protest against businessmen, bankers and politicians who allegedly ruined the world's economies.
The unemployed, students and pensioners were among the thousands who joined the "Occupy Rome" rally. It turned violent when some protesters hurled rocks and bottles and set cars on fire. Riot police responded by firing water cannons and tear gas.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange joined the 2,000 "Occupy London Stock Exchange" protesters outside St Paul's Cathedral, near the City financial district, according to Canada.com.
