Saudi Arabia's Human Rights Commission confirmed to CNN on Wednesday that divorce was finally granted to the controversial marriage between a 70-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl. The man recently became the center of indignation with several human rights groups and activists due to the remarkably huge age difference.

Dr. Bandar Alaiban, President of the Human Rights Commission, revealed that the man and the teenager together with her parents faced each other in a meeting.

"A divorce has taken place and the dispute has now been resolved amicably," Dr. Alaiban stated.

Issues continue to surround the marriage particularly with their ages. The unnamed man revealed in a CNN interview that he is 70 years old but the commission thinks that he is already 86. The man also shared that the girl he married said her age is 25 but it turns out she is only 15.

Dr. Hadi Al-Yami, head of the commission's branch, dealt with the case of the old man after he filed a complaint to a local official. The man claimed that the girl and her parents only tricked him after he paid a $20,000 dowry for the union. Dr. Al-Yami also confirmed the commission offered legal help to the teenager's family.

The reported May-December marriage ignited worldwide criticism from human rights groups regarding the marriage law of Saudi Arabia. The country does not require a minimum age for a person to get married. Instead, fathers are given the authority to decide whoever their daughters can marry and regardless of their age.

According to some local newspaper reports in 2012, Saudi Arabia is pushing the implementation of a minimum age law for marriages. Sadly, no signs of progress have been recognized ever since.
