Ohio State Marching Band Forms a T-Rex, Chews Up and Spits Out Drum Major
There are marching bands. Then there is The Ohio State State University Marching Band.
The group, famous for its renditions of Ohio State fight songs, including Buckeye Battle Cry, has also made the news lately for a string of creative and amusing visual performances. It is also the largest band composed purely of percussion and brass instruments in the world and is known as The Best Damn Band In The Land.
The band’s staple, the Script Ohio, is one of the iconic formations in college band circles. But there’s more to The Best Damn Band, as recent spectators found out.
Just a month after paying tribute to the wonderful world of video games and a week after doing the Moonwalk to Michael Jackson’s greatest hits, the Ohio State Marching Band came up with a melange of pop-culture tributes during the halftime show of the Buckeyes’ rivalry game against the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday.
The band started out innocently enough, forming a conservative Superman logo. Then the left flank of the formation broke off and formed the Man of Steel flying off a phone booth to save a burning building, composed of the right side, from tipping over.
After a few moments, Superman turned into the Boy Who Lived, Harry Potter on a broomstick. With only a few minutes remaining in their performance, the band morphed into a lumbering T-Rex straight out of the cult movie Jurassic Park, running down the field and chomping down a poor drum major.
Finally, the band paid tribute to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Two ships, one bearing the Ohio State logo and the other waving the blue-and-maize flag of the Buckeyes’ arch-rival, Michigan, engaged in a firefight, with Ohio State sinking the Wolverines’ ship.
Which makes everyone wonder, what will happen once the two teams actually meet in Ann Arbor on Nov 30? Only one way to find out: stay tuned for more college football news here!
