Two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazábal faced an embarrassing ordeal when he was detained by police in Georgia for speeding.

The Spaniard was on his way from The Masters in Augusta to compete in the RBC Heritage when he was caught allegedly travelling 97mph in a 65 zone.

The Effingham County sheriff's department pulled over Olazábal and according to a spokesman for the sheriff's department he was taken to jail and booked just before noon Monday. He spent more than an hour there and had to appear for a traditional police mug shot before posting $621 - the value of his speeding ticket - in order to be released.

Olazábal was detained because its the policy of the county that individuals from a foreign country must post a cash bond for their release.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he missed the cut at the RBS Heritage with rounds of 77 and 73.

Olazábal will captain the European team defending the Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club, Illinois, from September 25.
