Australian singer Olivia Newton-John opened on Friday a cancer and wellness centre in Melbourne named after her. She described the medical facility as offering loving care and support for cancer patients.

Ms Newton-John, who shot to fame with her portrayal of Sandra Dee in the 1980s hit film Grease opposite John Travolta, herself battled and won over breast cancer, but recently lost a sister to the same ailment.

The $189-million Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Well Centre will offer complementary therapies, including acupuncture and massage, and will even offer drinks.

The inclusion of complementary therapies is part of cancer hospitals worldwide accepting the concept of wellness which they have resisted for a long time, but the Aussie singer has been pushing.

"It is becoming the norm now but 10 years ago, it wasn't and it was kind of going against the grain to get people to accept the idea of wellness in the name," the singer of Hopelessly Devoted to You, seen below, said.

"But that to me was incredibly important and if I was going to spend 10 years of my life, it had to be more than just cancer. It had to be cancer and wellness because I believe you can go from cancer to wellness as I have," Bendigo Advertiser quoted Ms Newton-John.

While the patients in the 92-bed facility in Heidelberg would receive the best conventional medicine and there would also be clinical trials, the complementary therapies would help ease the physical, emotional and spiritual pain that comes with cancer treatment.

The patients would also be surrounded by people who know them are care for them.

"(People who) give you all the food you want, that give you a vodka if you want one," Ninemsn quoted Ms Newton-John who also popularised the song Physical.

It also features a gymnasium and immersion therapy room where patients can lie down in a dimly-lit room and watch videos of the Merri Creek or seals in blue water which is one of the passions of the singer contained in her song The Promise (The Dolphin Song), seen below.
