Operators oppose LNP plan to close Fraser Island
No one else would take a critical stance against closing a tourist spot such as Fraser Island but tourism operators.
One of the operators, the Fraser Island Four-Wheel Drive Hire Association, expressed heavy concern over the Liberal National Party (LNP) recommendation to close parts of the island on a rotation system. The rotation scheme is supposed to spur regeneration in the island.
Fraser Island Four-Wheel Drive Hire Association's David Robertson, however, considers the plan would bring in harm than good. Robertson said, "When you look at impacts of visitation in areas, you find if you have a large number of people dispersed over a broad period of time, the impacts can be regulated and maintained at a lower level."
Concentrating a large number of people in area over a short period, Robertson said, would only increase the impact. He said the plan is unnecessary because of a decrease in the number of tourists.
According to Robertson, "We've seen a steady decline in visitation numbers since about 2001 to 2002. What happens is people tend to focus and look at the peak periods of time like the Easter and Christmas and say, 'oh there's just too many people going to the island.'"
During other months of the year, he said, "there is basically hardly anyone on the island."
