‘Orange is the New Black’ Beats ‘House of Cards’ in Popularity Race
"Orange is the New Black" has beaten "House of Cards" to win the Favourite Streaming Series at the 40th People's Choice Awards.
"Orange is the New Black" also beat "Arrested Development," "Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis," and "Losing It with John Stamos" to win for itself the first award. The winners of People's Choice Awards are decided on the number of people votes received. It can be stated that "Orange of the New Black" has more fans than "House of Cards."
It was reported in October, 2013 that "Orange is the New Black" would become the most watching show on Netflix at the end of 2013. Reed Hastings, CEO at Netflix, and David Wells, CFO at Netflix, had said in a statement released in October: "Orange Is the New Black" will end the year [2013] as our most-watched original series ever and, as with each of our other previously launched originals, enjoys an audience comparable with successful shows on cable and broadcast TV."
"Orange is the New Black" is based on Piper Kerman's memoir by the same name. Jenji Kohan has created the drama-comedy series. This Netflix original series revolves around the character of suburbanite Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling, and is set in a minimum security prison for women in orange jumpsuits.
The Season 2 promises to be more interesting than the first. Also, it will have more depth and will become ensemble in character. The first season of "Orange is the New Black" mainly revolved around Piper Chapman and her ex-lesbian lover, Alex Vauss. The new season will focus on all the characters.
"House of Cards" won the 2013 Emmy award for the outstanding direction award in the drama series category. It is scheduled to return for its second season on February, 2014. Netflix has yet to announce the return date of "Orange is the New Black."
Netflix had ordered season 2 of "Orange is the New Black" before the premiere of the first season.
