It is increasingly becoming difficult for the broadcast channels and cable to come-up with a successful show. The Web streaming site, Netflix, has a different story to tell, with two highly successful shows this year: "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards."

"Orange is the New Black" is reportedly Netflix's most-watched original drama series. According to reports, "Orange is the New Black" has outshined "House of Cards" when it comes to raking in the viewership numbers. "House of Cards" won the Emmy award for the outstanding direction award in the drama series category, while "Orange is the New Black" was not in the contention since it premiered on July 11, 2013.

According to a statement signed by Reed Hastings, CEO at Netflix, and David Wells, CFO at Netflix: "Orange Is the New Black" will end the year as our most-watched original series ever and, as with each of our other previously launched originals, enjoys an audience comparable with successful shows on cable and broadcast TV."

"Orange is the New Black" is based on the memoir written by Piper Kerman. Jenji Kohan has created the drama-comedy series. Netflix's "Orange is the New Black" revolves around the character of suburbanite Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling, and is set in a minimum security prison for women in the orange jumpsuits.

Netflix ordered season 2 of "Orange is the New Black" before the premiere of the first season. The confidence in the show seems to have paid-off as it has won the praise of the critics and a loyal viewership.

Riding on the success of "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards," Netflix has reported a net income of $31.8 million for the third quarter of 2013.

Netflix hopes that the viewership for "Orange is the New Black" will grow "substantially" when the second season premieres some time in 2014. The drama-comedy series will be eligible for Emmy in 2014 and is likely to score nominations.
