Orange is the New Black: Taylor Schilling Draws on Own Experience to Play Piper
"Orange is the New Black," the hit Netflix original drama-comedy series, has brought instant fame to its cast and they are the new hot properties of television. Taylor Schilling, who plays the principal character of Piper Chapman, says that she drew on her own personal experience to portray her popular character in "Orange is the New Black."
Taylor talked about her character Piper Chapman at George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. She said to Stroumboulopoulos that the experiences that she accumulated in her real life helped in researching the character and portraying it. Taylor's father was a district attorney and he spent a lot of his time in prisons.
"A lot of what my father talked about we are actually dealing with on the show. When I was growing up he made it clear that the correctional officers in the prison were often just as much of a problem as the prisoners," Taylor said as quoted by CBCbooks.
The actress said that prisoners "are often a population that doesn't have a voice, we don't hear the stories very often or question why people are even incarcerated."
In an interview with Huffington Post, Taylor said that when she read the first episode of "Orange is the New Black," she "was totally, totally blown away. Across all mediums and platforms, it was the most dynamic female character that I've ever read, bar none. I was like, 'How can I get in on this?'!"
When asked about Laura Prepon's exit from the show, Taylor told the Huffington Post, "I don't know anything. I don't know anything, but I do know that there's no end to that (Alex Vause and Piper's relationship)."
The media is still speculating whether Laura Prepon, who plays the character of Alex Vause, is leaving "Orange is the New Black" and if she returns, whether it will be for only one episode.
Recently, Laura broke her silence and commented on the buzz that she is leaving the drama-comedy. Laura said that she is "definitely" coming back for the season two of "Orange is the New Black."
"I know what's happening, but I can't spoil anything, But I'm definitely coming back for season two. I know there's a lot floating around, but I can't wait to get back there. It's exciting," the actress said as quoted by The Variety.
Orange is the New Black," developed by Jenji Kohan, is based on Piper Kerman's memoir of the same name. Alex is the lesbian drug smuggler and ex-lover of Piper. Both are serving prison term in the same prison.
"Orange is the New Black" Season 2 returns someone in spring, 2014.
