It may not be as hot as it was but the Angry Birds fever that started three years ago remains in the right trajectory, hitting the intended marks and breaking new grounds, including a full-length movie set for theatrical showing on 2016.

The breakthrough Rovio mobile game spawned four more versions - Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Star Wars - and a host of ripped offs but the original edition has maintained its solid hold on millions of fans.

And to mark its inception on Dec 11 2009, Rovio thought it wise to rollout the 3.0 version of the original Angry Birds, this time around in HD and fully configured with the latest iOS and Android platforms.

Playing the game on iPhone 5 means the 'blank sides' have been dealt with by the update, plus the addition of 30 new levels that Rovio said are playable both on smartphones and tablets running the Apple and Android operating system.

To suit the original Angry Birds' birthday mood, Rovio designed 15 new levels that are centred on 'Birdday Party' theme while the other half point to the Bad Piggies themes.

The Piggies, which are the arch-nemesis of the sling-launched Birds, also bask in the glory attained by the flying creatures, having its game launched earlier this year by Rovio.

The Angry Birds update also welcomes the crossover of a new character known as Pink Bird, which according to NextWeb.com was first seen by mobile gaming games on one of the episodes in Angry Birds Seasons.

But the most notable development for the franchise is the likelihood that Angry Birds would soon hit movie screens around the world. The project is now underway and Rovio revealed in statement that two key figures have joined the team putting together the game's film rendition.

"On the third anniversary of the release of Angry Birds, Rovio Entertainment announced that Despicable Me producer John Cohen has signed on as producer of the upcoming Angry Birds movie," the company said.

It added that "David Maisel, former chairman of Marvel Studios and executive producer of Iron Man, will be executive producer of the feature film, coming to theatres in summer 2016."

As previously indicated, Rovio will bankroll and produce the planned Angry Birds movie, the success of which will determine if indeed the game developing firm is not a one-hit wonder, experts said.
