The 85th Academy Awards Hits the Record-Setting Audience Share in Three Years
The 85th Academy Awards has scored the highest ratings that Hollywood’s biggest event has had in three years. Want to know if Seth Macfarlane’s controversial boob song helped drum up the audience share at The Oscars 2013?
A survey conducted was conducted by Nielsen following the highly anticipated event held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles California Sunday, February 24, 2013.
Nielsen’s data showed that a recorded 40.3 million Americans tuned in to witness Hollywood’s most glamorous events this year, noting the three percent increase from the audience share recorded in 2012. ABC officials confirmed that the number of viewers at The Oscars 2013 is the highest figure in the last three years.
The increase in ratings at the Academy Awards this year is attributed to the increase in number of audience with age between 18 and 49. Considered the “most coveted by advertisers” this demographic showed an 11-percent increase this year.
Records also show that more men decided to put down their documents at work and grabbed a beer instead to watch at this year’s Academy’s. The Oscars successfully attracted more men to watch the show, particularly those aged between 18 and 34. The increase this year for this group of male audience is estimated at a 34-percent increase compared to the same group recorded to have watched the show in 2012.
The 85th Academy Awards have received mixed reviews and issues on racism, nudity and discrimination have been raised against its host Seth MacFarlane and the organizers of Hollywood’s most prestigious and highly-anticipated event.
Other top moments that could have attracted more audience to tune in includes audience intrigued for The Oscars first time host, celebration of popular James Bond movies for its 50 years in the industry and the fashion hits and misses among the stars, Jennifer Lawrence tripping onstage, Kristen Stewart hobbling in crutches and Anne Hathaway's tears, among others.
