A Christchurch man is waging a one-man battle against prostitution in his community and could get into trouble for his tactics and community organising efforts.

To shame customers of the brother in his street, Christchurch City Council candidate Wayne Hawker took photos of cars parked in front of the prostitution house and published the photos in his Facebook account.

He has been monitoring the area with hawk's eye and jotting down details of the cars that park and leave later.

"If we can stop people from visiting this brother, well maybe that will send a clear message this is not wanted in our area and the owner will pack up and go away," TV NZ quoted Mr Hawke.

However, for his efforts, the councilor candidate is in trouble since the operator of the brothel has appealed the closure order that Mr Hawke initiated, which means it could still legally operate until its appeal is heard.

Legal experts said Mr Hawke opened himself to a possible lawsuit when he published the photos of the plate numbers, but the one-man crusader is not afraid.

Anne Columbus, inspections and enforcements manager of the council, said the brothel may still be allowed to remain open if it initiates some changes.

"We just need to get them to manage it so it's compliant either with that location, or, if they're wanting to take that level of brothel business activity, they take it somewhere else," she added.

Among the ladies-in-waiting at the brother are Asian women, Mr Hawke disclosed.
