In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rankin said that he had extensive discussions with Skelton about where they should take the relationship of the two characters. The actors decided to take the romance a little slow, when compared to the books written by Diana Gabaldon. The cast members did this because they felt the TV series was “more realistic.”
“We wanted to give it a few beats, a few hints of what may happen with Roger and Brianna, and drop a couple of hints at what their relationship might become, especially for the people who haven’t read the books, who don’t already know what happens,” Rankin said about his character in “Outlander” Season 2 finale.
Those who have read the books know the two end up falling in love. Rankin pointed out that his character falls for Brianna “more quickly.” The actor said that Roger is an “open character,” who is “more open emotionally.” Brianna on the other hand has to be “brought out of her shell a wee bit.”
