'Outlander' season 3: Production draft, locations and more
“Outlander” fans may have watched episode 4 of season 3 umpteen times, and now it is time to go behind-the-scenes. The producers have released some fun details that include the final production draft of the script, details about some of the locations and more.
Production of an episode begins with the script. It is up to the director to translate the vision of writers into scenes. The script of episode 4 posted on the Outlander Community reveals behind-the-scene details and instructions on each scene, along with highlighted portions of more important shots.
The website shows details about some of the filming locations. The fictional houses of Helwater and Ellesmere Manor were filmed at two stately homes in the south of Scotland. These locations were apparently used in previous filming from a different side, but the website doesn’t reveal what locations these were before. For episode 4, Hopetoun House stood in for Ellesmere estate; the other location is Gosford Estate.
Pictures of the wooden snake that Jamie (Sam Heughan) gave to young Willie (Clark Butler) gives the fans a closer look at the prop. There are also pictures of research boards that Claire (Caitriona Balfe), Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) used to try and locate Jamie.
While it is common practice to shoot the exterior shots on location then get the cast and crew to do the interiors back at the studio, episode 4 was different. Filming was done on site.
Each episode of “Outlander” comes with its own set of challenges and unique requirements. Season 3 is particularly different from others as the story told at the moment spans two decades. The producers are tasked with showing the evolution of Jamie and Claire through snapshots of their respective lives.
