'Outlander' star Sam Heughan brings 'ruggedness' and 'innocence,' says Executive Vice President for Talent and Casting at Sony
Executive Vice President for Talent and Casting at Sony Dawn Steinberg appeared in a new video to talk about the performances of “Outlander” stars. She spoke about the three main actors Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe and Tobias Menzies in the video.
In a video posted on YouTube, Steinberg said that Heughan (Jamie Fraser) brings a “ruggedness” and at the same time an “innocence” to the TV series. “He’s the perfect leading man. His body, his eyes his square jaw…it’s traditional of what you’ve always looked for in a leading man,” she said.
The TV series is once again in the race for the annual Emmy Awards. Steinberg pointed out that there are a lot of character actors who will be in the race and although Heughan can’t be described as a character actor on the show, he has created a “full bodied character in Jamie.”
Jaime has had to shift to a whole in world in “Outlander” Season 2, in which he travels to France with his wife. Similarly, Claire (Balfe) has had to travel to different worlds.
Claire has travelled through time and lived in two separate centuries and has loved two different men in these two time periods. Steinberg said that Balfe has such a voice and quality that she can be placed in any time period and the director can just ask her to act and she would deliver.
Talking about Menzies, Steinberg said that people would tell her they don’t really know who he is. She would then list the roles he has played over the years and people would suddenly realise how good he has been in his roles in TV shows.
Steinberg said that Menzies is able to deliver a stunning performance in “Outlander” TV series because of his integrity to the characters he is playing. The actor plays the dual role of Frank and Black Jack on the show.
