Pacquiao: Mayweather Worried About Tainting Undefeated Record
Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. has yet to happen and yet both boxers have already fired serious jabs against each other. The latest trash talk came from the Filipino who claimed that the undefeated American is so worried about getting his first loss that he won’t risk taking him inside the boxing ring.
“Why he will not fight me?” Pacquiao said via The The Star Ledger. “Well, I think he is worried about his (undefeated) record. He talks about his zero losses. The zero that means so much to him means nothing when measured against who he fought.
Mayweather is undefeated in 46 professional boxing bouts.
Short of calling Mayweather a coward, Pacquiao believes that it is that fear of possibly tainting the immaculate record that is holding back Mayweather in agreeing to the blockbuster fight of the century. Failed overtures for a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather has been caused by various reasons including disagreements on drug testing, fight purse and even the divide between Pacquiao’s promoter and Mayweather.
“You talk pound-for-pound best, or undefeated champion. If you don’t defend against the best, none of that means anything.”
Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO) will fight another undefeated fighter in Chris Algieri (20-0-0, 8 KO) also of the United States of America for the World Boxing Organization (WBI) welterweight title at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort in Macau on Nov. 22, 2014.
Meanwhile, Mayweather (46-0-0, 26 KO) will stake his undefeated record in a rematch with Marcos Maidana (35-4-0, 31 KO) for the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight, World Boxing Council (WBC) super world welterweight and WBC light middleweight titles at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sept. 13, 2014.
A Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather fight is still far from being finalized despite the clamor of the fans from both sides and the entire boxing world. For now, these fans can settle for the verbal jabs thrown between the two fighters ranked no. 1 and no. 2 in boxing’s best pound-for-pound list.
