Pair of Naked Buddha Sculptures Taken Down in China Due To Public Offense, Caused Social Media Stir

Two gigantic naked Buddha sculptures were taken down from a Chinese building located within the shopping district in Jinan city. Local authorities say that the naked sculptures are considered a public offense.
One of the controversial statues was made climbing up the wall and its bottom part facing the entire street below. The other one was located on top of the wall with hands clasp like it was praying.
According to a South China Morning Post report, it was a user from the Chinese social media site Sina Weibo who posted the images of the naked Buddha sculptures. It went viral online over the social media site, but they were taken out the following day. Additional details state that the controversial statues made some of the practitioners of the Zen Buddhist religion feel offended.
A practitioner named as Miaoming mentioned how he broke into tears when he saw the pair of naked Buddhas. "How come a nation with a thousand-year history has so little respect for its own culture?" he added on his blog.
Other reactions simply saw it as funny that several netizens even came up with various nicknames and captions for it like "Buddha Jumps Over The Wall." It is also the name of a costly dish that is made up of luxurious ingredients when it comes to Chinese cooking. It is believed that the story behind it says the concoction of the ingredient smelled so good that even the Buddha can't help but jump over the other side of the wall just to taste it.
If it got the attention of social media users, then the more that it got the attention of passersby on the streets of Jinan. The heated debates online were mainly about the gathering of opinions whether the two naked Buddha structures are considered "art" or "offensive." Even if the naked statues were already gone, a group of Jinan residents still see the bright side of its brief presence.
"The orders [of dismantlement] were sent last night. But thanks to the sculptures, our conservative Jinan city finally made headlines," the group of residents stated according to scmp.com.
The creator of the designs and the reason behind it remains unknown.
