This Halloween, the mother of all "Paranormal Activity" prequels is set to be unleashed with the release of "Paranormal Activity 3." Set 20 years before the first film, this leg of the franchise promises to take the audience to the beginning of the curse that has plagued the family of the two main protagonists, Kristi and Katie.

Fans of the first film are familiar with the style of Oren Pelie in delivering the horror by utilizing surveillance cameras. The effect is amplified by directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman in the third film, though it is supposed to be set in the 80's.

This is achieved through the girls' stepfather of sorts, Dennis, who first acknowledges a presence in their house. Dennis, a wedding videographer, sets up cameras in the whole house and almost immediately the terror starts.

One of the most noted footages being that where a video camera is rigged to a slow oscillating fan, giving the viewers a petrifyingly slow pan of the room and its invisible inhabitants.

Unlike the first two films where the demon plaguing them could not be seen, the tormentor could be slightly made out in "Paranormal Activity 3" and takes form in being an imaginary friend of one of the girls. We learn that this primarily playful friend is named Toby. While first appearing as harmless, things take a turn for the horrific as Toby doesn't get what he wants.

To its credit, the film is a perfect prequel of a prequel as well as a stand-alone movie. What it lacks in plot twists, it makes up for in silent trepidation and masterfully directed suspense. Watching "Paranormal Activity 3" is sure to be the perfect Halloween starter and will make you think twice before going home alone.
