Australian fast bowler James Pattinson will not play in Friday's first ODI against the West Indies.

Pattinson strained a buttock muscle while fielding in the second tri-series final against Sri Lanka earlier this month.

The injury ruled him out of the third and deciding clash in Adelaide, which the hosts won, and left him in doubt for most of the one-dayers in the Caribbean.

While the right-armer's participation in the series opener of the five-match affair seems highly unlikely, coach Mickey Arthur hoped to see Pattinson reclaim his place in the starting XI come the second ODI in Kingstown on Sunday and beyond.

"We'll see soon. It's certainly unrealistic from game one but we'll see how he goes through the week and when we can get him up and bowling again," admitted Arthur.

"James is going to be a fantastic cricketer so he needs to be exposed as soon as he can and again we've got to make sure we put the best team on the field day in and day out in order to get the results we want.

"I would bowl him every day of the week if I could and let him loose but that's just the way I am - the more for him the better.

"The more opportunities he can get and the more he can develop his game the better and I feel the same for all the younger bowlers.

The tourists are without captain Michael Clarke for the limited-overs leg of the tour, which will also feature two Twenty20 Internationals. Sidelined by a hamstring injury, Clarke has handed the reins to Shane Watson.
