Barangay Ginebra fans are willing to pay for Mark Caguioa’s 20,000 pesos fine from the PBA after Commissioner Chito Salud announced the penalty on Wednesday afternoon.

After Barangay Ginebra San Miguel lost to the Alaska Aces Sunday night, the mercurial shooting guard of the most popular ballclub in the Philippines took to Twitter and the media his frustrations about the referees.

After Salud meted out the penalty, Gins fans expressed their feelings on Twitter but none better than some of the supporters’ plan to help out Caguioa in paying for the fine:

@barangayginebra simulan na yan! Lol #50CentsForMarkCaguioa

Caguioa was appreciative of the fans’ efforts too:

Ang sweet talaga ng fans ng GINEBRA yun pala ibig sabihin ng 50cents dto talaga ma fefeel mo talaga ang pagmamahal syo #WELOVEUBACK — Mark Caguioa (@officialMC47) September 4, 2013

Similar fans reactions have happened in the past in the sporting world.

In May of 2013, New York Red Bulls’ head coach Mike Petke was penalised $2,000 for comments made about match officials. A fan group called Empire Supporters Club launched an online campaign to to pay the penalty.

After LeBron James left the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010, team owner Dan Gilbert was fined $100,000 by the NBA for publicly criticising James. A team spokesman said later that Cleveland fans via email and phone offered to help Gilbert pay for the fine.

There are still no reports if Caguioa will indeed accept the donation from the fans.

Still, in cases like these, it’s the thought that counts.
